Brendyn is currently the Strength and Conditioning coach at the Western Force Super Rugby Team, WA. We were lucky enough to interview him about his job and how using GymAware has impacted on the way he works.
Before using the GymAware, what did you use?
Occasionally I used contact mats and a custom made rotary encoder that was fixed to a Smith machine and connected to a laptop.
What challenges did you face before using the GymAware?
There were two main challenges. First, measuring gym based progress by kilograms only. The second was providing objective feedback and motivation to sub maximal loads moved quickly.
How did these challenges affect your programming and coaching?
It made it hard to challenge athletes with power training at loads below maximal. Providing feedback on movement speed and intensity was difficult. With the GymAware, it is quite easy to provide information on bar velocity.
What made you decide to use GymAware? Did you try out any other solutions?
GymAware was the product selected by the Head S&C at the time. I did not try any other solutions. Whilst I have seen others in action, I am extremely satisfied with GymAware and the service from Kinetic.
What was your experience when switching and/or getting started with the GymAware?
When starting with GymAware, it was easy to be overwhelmed by the vast number of variables reported and the attraction to assess lots of exercises. The Kinetic website has continually provided users with more information in terms of reporting, tutorials and contributions from users, which has provided excellent support to better use the GymAware
How has the GymAware helped yourself or your business?
The GymAware has been an instrumental component of the strength room for eight seasons. It has provided motivation, record keeping and information for training programs.
In what Sports (or Athletes) have you used our equipment with?
Predominately professional rugby union, but also with water polo and surf boat rowers. Working with these particular groups, it is clear that they all liked the immediate feedback provided and competition with them self and also team mates. Further, the iTouch app is very user friendly and athletes can become very competent users in a short space of time. I have also found the GymAware iTouch version to be very powerful in furthering the education of the athletes and their ability to really understand their training.
