Gerrit Keferstein is the owner of ALLOUT Pro Performance Training, which aims to apply sports science to the competitive environments of professional sports teams and olympic athletes. He also is a lecturer for the German Olympic Committee and a medical student.
In between his interests of optimizing the biochemical, neuromuscular and biomechanic efficiency of athletes, we were luck enough to grab this interview from him.
What made you decide to use the GymAware PowerTool?
Before using GymAware we tested athletes with 3RM Max Testing and a Jump Mat. We had the choice between a Force Plate, the Tendo and the GymAware. We decided on GymAware because of portability, bluetooth connectivity, good software and online based data storage.
Before using the GymAware Tool we had two parameters we knew about the gym work of our athletes. Volume and Load. But not knowing the third and important variable to strength training = SPEED. Volume/Load/Speed.
Without knowing speed we did NOT know the true intensity of the session. Lifting 3 Reps with 80% of your Max is a very different stimulus to your system whether you lift it with 0,5m/s or with 0,9m/s.
We were also having trouble motivating athletes to move the bar as fast as possible on some lifts. They would not know they only lifted it at around 85% of what they could really do. We needed a situation where the athlete would get direct feedback on their lifting speed.
The other issues with looking at a jump result from a contact mat, was we would only know the height of the jump but not the strategy of the jump (dcc/concentric relationship, acceleration strategy) to adequately monitor athletes.
GymAware is easy to setup, and easy to understand. The athletes needed some time to get used to working with the device, as we let our athletes work with the iPads to select their profiles and weights.
