Here is a great article from the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach for the Argentina Pumas, Keir Wenham-Flatt. He discusses his GymAware experience - don’t forget to watch the YouTube clip!
In our training with Los Pumas we are always striving to strike the balance between pushing our players to achieve maximum adaptation but not pushing them so far that their performance suffers, or that they become susceptible to non-contact injuries. These difficulties are compounded when our players arrive in camp after a long domestic season, and we only have a matter of weeks to prepare them for the Rugby Championship.
The need to be extremely precise with how we prescribe training load and intensity to our players is at the forefront of our mind, as is implementing effective monitoring strategies. We have found GymAware to be an extremely useful tool in helping us to achieve these goals. We use GymAware in a variety of manners in our physical training, one of which is simple feedback to the players when they lift to enhance power output and maximise the effectiveness of each rep.
Another way in which we use the GymAware tool is in the selection of exercise intensity, specifically the selection of the movement velocity that best corresponds to the physical qualities we are training to enhance. This is invaluable for us because of the broad differences that exist between the playing positions and their corresponding strength qualities. Utilising the tool in this way also allows us to track power output in positional exercises without the need for direct testing. This is invaluable in terms of time efficiency for us.
We look forward to utilising GymAware in our training for the remainder of our Championship prep and the competition itself
