Mathew Pell: National Strength and Conditioning Coach, AFL Umpiring Department

Mathew has been involved with the AFL umpiring department for the last 3 years as their National Strength and Conditioning advisor. Perviously to this he was involved at Cricket Victoria's females high performance programs and the Australian U'19 cricket teams. He has an undergraduate in Exercise Science Human Movement and currently holds a level 1 ASCA accreditation.

We were lucky enough to have Mathew tell us a little bit about his GymAware experience

Time is precious, for any coach. We have to pre plan our sessions and make sure our coaching staff stay on time with delivery to properly complete our monitoring strategies. Our S&C staff have roughly 15min to complete our monitoring once week so we have to ensure the systems we have in place a effective and easy to coordinate. GymAware gives the live feedback the Umpires enjoy and allows us to complete our sessions whilst easily uploadng key data to the online account.

Previously we used the Myotest as a linear force transducer, but we needed a system that would provide instant feedback to motivate and make decisions based on the status of the individual athlete then and there. Thats where GymAware came in.

After playing around with GymAware and syncing to my phone and iPad, I quickly realised GymAware’s potential within our coaching environment. It certainly was a positive move. Now we have integrated this into our sessions.

To be able to assess an individual umpire through the use of our jump protocol has been able to plan for effective prescription within the gym and relevant recovery protocols.

We are using GymAware with the AFL umpiring group from senior to junior development level. Our use includes -

  • Feedback within session.
  • Tracking performances over the course of the season.
  • Monitoring for any signs of fatigue.
  • Motivating them to achieve greater heights
  • To actually put a number to the speed of the lift prescribed and monitoring for signs and symptoms of fatigue this will greatly assist.
